Travel Disruption as Storm Hits Sussex
Storm Chandra, the third major storm to hit the UK this month, caused widespread disruption across Sussex on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall and strong winds led to significant issues on both roads and railway services throughout the region.
Flood Warnings Across East and West Sussex
Two flood warnings were in place for Barcombe Mills on the River Ouse, and for Hellingly and Horsebridge on the Cuckmere and Bull Rivers. Nearly a dozen flood alerts were also issued across East and West Sussex, raising concerns among residents.
Along the coastline, sewage pollution alerts were active, according to Surfers Against Sewage’s online map.
Dr Colin Tourle, who lives near the River Cuckmere in Hellingly, said he had to move his car after his lane became waterlogged. Speaking to BBC Radio Sussex, he noted how quickly the water rose, adding that while his cottage had flooded in the past, severe incidents had become less frequent.

Transport Delays and Safety Calls Surge
East Sussex Highways reported a high volume of emergency calls, urging residents to report fallen trees or floodwaters lasting more than two hours.
Southern Railway confirmed delays just after 09:00 GMT on key routes including Brighton–Haywards Heath, Barnham–Ford, and Lewes–Eastbourne as the storm impacted the rail network.
Residents Expect Further Impact
Barcombe resident Jo Brook said flooding in her area was expected, warning that cars could become stuck and the situation could turn into a safety hazard.
Weather Warnings Remain in Effect
A yellow rain warning from the Met Office remained in place until midday on Tuesday. Additional yellow warnings for ice in parts of Sussex and Kent were issued for Tuesday night, with concerns that already saturated surfaces could freeze.
