Storm Goretti Brings Heavy Snow Travel Chaos Alert
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy snow across parts of eastern England, warning of travel disruption and possible power cuts as Storm Goretti moves into the region.
The warning is in force from 18:00 on Thursday until 12:00 on Friday, covering large areas of the East of England. Forecasters say the storm is likely to bring heavy snowfall, icy conditions, and reduced visibility.
Areas Affected by the Snow Warning
The warning applies to several counties, including:
Northamptonshire
Cambridgeshire
Peterborough
Bedfordshire
Buckinghamshire
Hertfordshire
Up to 20cm of Snow Expected
The Met Office said up to 10cm of snow could settle widely, with as much as 20cm possible in some areas, particularly on higher ground. These conditions may make roads dangerous and lead to delays on rail and air services.
Risk of Travel Disruption and Power Cuts
People living in affected areas are advised to prepare for:
Slow and hazardous driving conditions
Delays or cancellations to trains and flights
Possible power outages and disruption to mobile phone networks
Storm Goretti was named by Meteo-France, as the strongest winds associated with the system are expected to impact northern France.
Coldest Night of the Winter So Far
The snow warning follows the coldest night of the winter in the UK, with temperatures falling to -12.5°C in Marham, Norfolk. Prolonged cold weather has already caused disruption, including school closures in parts of Norfolk and Suffolk.
The Met Office is urging residents to check weather updates regularly and plan journeys carefully as wintry conditions continue across eastern England.
