Scott Mills exits BBC after sudden shock decision
Veteran broadcaster Scott Mills appeared unaware of his imminent departure from BBC Radio 2 when he ended his Breakfast Show by telling listeners he would be back the following day. Hours later, the BBC confirmed he was no longer working for the organisation, in a move described internally as “sudden and unexpected.”
Mills, 53, had been hosting the popular Radio 2 Breakfast Show and remains one of the UK’s most recognisable radio personalities. Reports suggest the decision relates to allegations concerning his “personal conduct,” reportedly linked to a relationship dating back more than a decade. Further details about the claims have not been publicly confirmed.
The morning after Mills’ final broadcast, fellow presenter Gary Davies stepped in as a temporary replacement, informing listeners he was “in for Scott Mills” while the broadcaster made last-minute changes to the schedule. Davies has continued hosting the flagship show on an interim basis, with bookmakers reportedly considering both Davies and Vernon Kay among the frontrunners to take over the role permanently.

In a short statement, a BBC spokesperson confirmed the change, saying:
“While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”
According to reports, BBC Director of Music Lorna Clarke informed staff via an internal message, acknowledging the unexpected nature of the development.
The sudden exit has surprised colleagues across the network. Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine told listeners he had only learned of the situation shortly before going on air.
“I had not heard anything about it until it was on the BBC website,” Vine said. “I have nothing more than that it was allegations about Scott Mills’s personal conduct.”
The reported allegations are said to relate to a historic relationship more than ten years ago. Mills married his long-term partner Sam Vaughan in 2024, after announcing their engagement in 2021 following four years together.
The BBC has not provided further comment on the circumstances surrounding Mills’ departure, and it remains unclear who will ultimately take over the permanent hosting role for the Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
