Prince Andrew horseriding ban after arrest probe

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has reportedly been advised by royal aides to refrain from horse riding following his recent arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. According to reports, senior royal aides warned that being seen engaging in leisure activities — particularly horse riding, one of his well-known hobbies — could create negative public perception while he remains under active police investigation.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Prince Andrew, legally known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested last Thursday by Thames Valley Police. The arrest reportedly took place on his 66th birthday. He was questioned for approximately 11 hours before being released without charge.

The investigation centers on allegations that he may have shared confidential information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during his time serving as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment between 2001 and 2011.

Prince Andrew has strongly denied any wrongdoing.

Royal Image Concerns

Sources suggest that palace aides believe public appearances of the Duke enjoying horseback riding could be viewed as insensitive given the seriousness of the allegations.

Horse riding has long been considered one of Prince Andrew’s favorite pastimes. He was previously seen riding shortly after stepping back from royal duties and losing his honorary military titles.

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the reported restrictions.

Political Pressure and File Release

The controversy has intensified political scrutiny over Prince Andrew’s past public role.

UK lawmakers recently supported a motion calling for the release of official documents related to his appointment as trade envoy. The requested files include:

  • Vetting procedures
  • Government correspondence
  • Communications involving senior officials connected to the role

These documents may shed light on how and why Prince Andrew remained in the position for a decade.

Wider Allegations

Separately, former UK business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson has also reportedly been arrested in connection with similar allegations involving the possible sharing of sensitive information with Epstein.

Members of Parliament from across party lines have voiced strong criticism of Prince Andrew’s conduct and past public service role.

Police Search Concluded

Thames Valley Police confirmed that officers have now completed a search of Prince Andrew’s former residence, Royal Lodge in Berkshire.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated:

“We understand the significant public interest in this case and our investigation remains ongoing.”

Authorities have indicated that further updates are unlikely in the immediate future as inquiries continue.
