Netflix Drama Highlights Somerset and Bath

Netflix has launched a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “The Seven Dials Mystery”, with large portions of the series filmed across the West Country. The production showcases locations such as Bristol, Bath’s Great Pulteney Street, and the West Somerset Railway, putting the region in the spotlight.

Written by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall, the series stars Martin Freeman and Helena Bonham Carter and centres on a murder unfolding at a lavish country estate.

Economic Boost for Local Areas

According to Bath and North East Somerset Council, the shoot brought “direct income” as well as wider benefits for local businesses through spending on accommodation, hospitality, and community donations.

Location manager Dee Gregson said the production chose the West Somerset Railway for its rural scenery:

“We did a significant amount of research. They wanted the train to stop somewhere beautiful — Blue Anchor Bay allowed us to capture both the beach and the countryside.”

Cast and crew stayed at the 15th-century Luttrell Arms Hotel in Dunster, where owner Anne Way described the actors as “very lovely,” noting Bonham Carter’s enthusiasm for the building’s historic interiors.

Bath Transformed for the Period Drama

Bath played host to filming for two days, but preparations took weeks. Councillor Manda Rigby explained that teams removed modern features — including bins, bus stops, lighting, and signage — to maintain the setting’s authenticity.

Rigby said filming creates both financial and cultural benefits, adding that the production team donated to local organisations during their stay.

Region Welcomes Screen Exposure

Business owners and residents expressed excitement over the show’s arrival, with Way describing West Somerset as a “well-kept secret” that could attract more visitors thanks to the screen exposure.
