Melania Trump, a former model from Slovenia known for her reserved public persona, has shaped her tenure as U.S. first lady in a distinctly independent manner. Often choosing not to comment on political matters, she has typically signaled quiet alignment with President Donald Trump rather than taking an outspoken role. Her recent press conference rejecting claims of any connection to Jeffrey Epstein marked one of the rare occasions she directly addressed journalists.

Despite holding one of the most visible roles in American public life, Melania Trump has remained notably private. During her husband’s first year in office in 2017, she delivered only eight speeches, a stark contrast to the 74 given by Michelle Obama in 2009, the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. Author Kate Andersen Brower described her in 2024 as “very unknowable,” highlighting the mystery that often surrounds her public image.

Still, Melania Trump has periodically drawn attention. In 2020, she supported her husband’s contested claims regarding the presidential election, writing that “every legal – not illegal – vote should be counted,” language critics said echoed his assertions of widespread fraud. Earlier, in 2018, she sparked controversy by wearing a jacket reading “I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO YOU?” during a trip to Texas to visit migrant children separated from their parents. She later said the message was aimed at media critics.

This year, Melania Trump released a documentary titled Melania, focusing on the 20 days leading up to her husband’s second inauguration. Promoted as offering rare behind-the-scenes insight into her life, the film received mixed reviews, with some critics arguing it revealed little new about the private first lady.

Now 55, Melania Trump is the third wife of Donald Trump and the first U.S. first lady to become a citizen through naturalization. She began modeling at age 16 and later worked in fashion capitals such as Paris and Milan before relocating to New York in 1996. Two years later, she met Donald Trump at a party in the city, and the couple married in January 2005.

President Trump has compared her to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, praising her elegance and popularity. In a 2019 interview on Fox & Friends, he remarked, “We have our own Jackie O today. It’s called Melania. We’ll call it Melania T,” adding that he believes she is widely admired despite what he views as limited recognition from the media.
