The visit will begin on April 27, with a state banquet at the White House planned for the following day. President Trump expressed enthusiasm about hosting the British monarch, writing on Truth Social that he looks forward to meeting the king, whom he said he greatly respects.
The trip comes at a sensitive time in transatlantic relations. Tensions have grown between Washington and London due to the United Kingdom’s cautious position regarding the Iran conflict. In addition to disagreements over Iran, differences have emerged regarding the future of the Chagos Islands, where a strategically important joint U.S.-U.K. military base is located. Trump has voiced opposition to Britain’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, a policy that has sparked debate within the United Kingdom.
Despite tensions, Starmer has avoided publicly criticizing the U.S. president and has emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.
