Google rolls out major Gmail security update

Google has introduced a major update that, for the first time in Gmail’s 20-year history, allows users to change their primary email address. The update is rolling out alongside a range of new AI-driven features powered by Google’s Gemini platform, which is becoming further integrated across Gmail, Photos, and other services.

According to 9to5Google, users will be able to switch their primary Gmail address once every 12 months, with a lifetime limit of three changes. Cybersecurity analysts say the move offers an opportunity for people to refresh their digital identity and strengthen online security. By adopting a new address and updating it across essential accounts, individuals can reduce exposure to spam, marketing databases, and risks tied to older credentials. The original address can then be reserved for infrequent use, with Gmail tools helping to manage incoming mail.

Experts still advise caution, noting that even Google’s robust spam filters aren’t perfect. Google confirmed the feature is rolling out gradually and will become available to all users over time. The company is also reportedly preparing a “shielded email” feature that would generate temporary sign-up aliases.

For many, the update highlights the growing importance of email security, as primary addresses continue to function as core identifiers across online platforms.
