Crown Jewels Targeted in Custard Protest; Four Arrested and Bailed

Four people arrested for allegedly throwing dessert and custard at the display case containing the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London have been released on conditional bail, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. Officers said the individuals were detained on suspicion of criminal damage after the incident, which occurred on December 6, 2025.

The protest was carried out by Take Back Power, a newly formed civil disobedience group whose first social-media post appeared less than a week ago. A handout photo released by the group shows activists holding a banner reading “Democracy has crumbled – Tax The Rich” shortly after food—reported to be apple crumble and custard—was hurled at the protective case.

While the Tower of London was forced to partially close, Historic Royal Palaces confirmed that the Crown Jewels were not damaged, thanks to the secure display casing.

In a statement, the activist group said: “Democracy has crumbled. Billionaires buy political influence whilst homeless people die on the streets.” The group described current economic inequality as “disgusting” and argued the action was meant to highlight wealth disparity during one of the most dangerous times of year for vulnerable people.

Policing minister Sarah Jones condemned the act as “disgraceful,” stressing the difference between the democratic right to protest and what she called unacceptable behaviour.

The four individuals are expected to return for further questioning in early January 2026 as investigations continue.
