Heavy Rain Brings Renewed Flood Risk Across UK
England and Wales are bracing for more heavy rain after more than 200 flood alerts were issued across the UK, with communities still recovering from recent widespread flooding.
The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather warning for rain, running from noon to midnight on Monday. The warning covers southern Wales, south-east England, and south-west England. Forecasters expect 10–15mm of rain across many areas, with 20–30mm possible in exposed locations due to strong south to south-easterly winds.
Flooding Risk Remains Elevated
The latest warning affects areas already badly hit by flooding following Storm Chandra, with ground conditions remaining saturated.
On Sunday evening, the Environment Agency reported 96 flood warnings across England, meaning flooding was expected, along with 219 flood alerts where flooding was possible. In Wales, Natural Resources Wales issued four additional flood alerts.
Disruption Likely for Travel and Communities
The Met Office warned that homes, businesses, and roads could be flooded, with travel disruption expected, particularly during Monday evening’s rush hour.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said temperatures could reach double figures in parts of the Midlands, eastern England, and the South East, making conditions feel “relatively pleasant for February.” However, he cautioned that worsening weather was on the way:
“Rain will move in from the west during the afternoon, with strengthening winds, especially in the south west. As the rain falls on already saturated ground, further flooding is possible into the evening.”
He added that surface water on roads could lead to difficult driving conditions across Wales, central southern England, and the South East.
Hundreds of Properties Already Affected
The Environment Agency estimates that at least 300 properties have been flooded, while around 16,200 properties have been protected by flood defences.
Flood duty manager Sarah Cook said significant groundwater flooding is likely to continue in Dorset and Wiltshire, with minor impacts expected in Hampshire over the next five days, and West Sussex from Saturday.
The agency confirmed that teams are mobilised nationwide to inspect flood defences, clear river blockages, and closely monitor river levels as further rain is forecast.
