Monsoon Rains and Tropical Storm Trigger Indonesia’s Worst Flooding in Years
Severe floods and landslides triggered by days of intense monsoon rain have claimed more than 200 lives across Indonesia, with nearly 80 people still missing, according to updated figures from national disaster authorities. The deadly weather, intensified by a tropical storm system, has caused one of the most catastrophic flooding events in the region in recent years.
In West Sumatra, officials confirmed 61 deaths, with 90 individuals still unaccounted for, marking a sharp increase from earlier reports.
Meanwhile, North Sumatra has recorded 116 fatalities, and at least 35 people have died in Aceh province as rescue teams continue to battle harsh conditions to reach isolated communities.
The impact of the storm reached neighboring Malaysia, where flooding in Perlis state killed two people and submerged large areas under water.
Authorities warn that the annual monsoon season, typically occurring between June and September, is becoming increasingly unpredictable. Scientists link the worsening conditions to climate change, which intensifies storm systems, increases sea temperatures, and leads to heavier, more destructive rainfall. Warmer air holds more moisture, resulting in stronger downpours, flash flooding, and enhanced wind gusts.
Emergency teams across the affected regions continue search-and-rescue operations as meteorologists caution that further rainfall is expected in the coming days.
