Cristiano Ronaldo: 2026 FIFA World Cup Will ‘Definitely’ Be My Last
Speaking with CNN’s Becky Anderson during the Tourism Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo said:
“I will be 41 years old and I think it will be the moment in the big competition.”
When asked about his retirement plans, the Portugal captain admitted that the end of his legendary career is near:
“I’m enjoying the moment, but when I say soon, I mean really soon because I gave everything for football.”
Ronaldo, who has spent 25 years at the top level, reflected proudly on his remarkable journey:
“I’ve done everything. I have many records at different clubs and with the national team. I’m really proud. Let’s just enjoy the moment.”

Record-Breaking Legacy
With 143 international goals, Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football. He also holds the unique record of being the first male player to score in five different World Cups.
The expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, kicks off on June 11, 2026. The official World Cup draw will take place on December 5, 2025, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Earlier this year, Ronaldo became the first footballer to reach billionaire status, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, following his record-breaking contract with Saudi club Al Nassr.
Ronaldo on His Son: “I Hope He Becomes Better Than Me”
Ronaldo also opened up about his son, Cristiano Jr., who currently plays for Portugal’s U-16 team.
“Human beings don’t like anyone being better than them. But as a father, I truly wish my kids will be better than me. I’ll never be jealous of that, trust me.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner added that he doesn’t want his son to feel pressured by his legacy:
“As a father, I just want him to be happy and follow his own dreams. I’ll always be here to help him become whatever he wants to be.”
