Shoplifting fears push Costa to add security staff
Costa Coffee has increased security presence at several of its UK locations following concerns about rising incidents of shoplifting. The well-known coffee chain, which offers a range of sandwiches, snacks, and beverages, confirmed that extra support has been introduced at a limited number of branches after reviewing its existing safety measures.
According to reports, some London stores — including branches in Denmark Hill and Croydon — as well as locations in Manchester, now have additional security personnel stationed near entrances and counters. Images circulating online show guards positioned to deter theft and maintain order inside the shops.
A Costa Coffee spokesperson explained that the decision aims to support employees and maintain a safe environment for customers. The company emphasized that the changes apply only to a small number of stores where added security was deemed necessary.
Retailers across the UK have increasingly adopted in-store security strategies as concerns over theft grow. Many businesses cite loss prevention, staff safety, and insurance considerations as reasons for strengthening protective measures.
The move comes during an ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which some analysts suggest may contribute to increased retail crime. Data on shoplifting trends, however, presents a mixed picture. Statistics from the Metropolitan Police indicate that reported shoplifting incidents in London decreased slightly — by 3.4% — between April 2025 and March 2026. Other serious crimes, including homicide, are also reported to be at some of their lowest levels in the capital in a decade.
Despite this, separate figures from the Office for National Statistics recorded more than 80,000 shoplifting offences in London during 2024 and 2025, highlighting ongoing concerns among retailers. London Mayor Sadiq Khan noted that economic pressures can influence acquisitive crime rates, while emphasizing that theft remains unacceptable.
Retail industry representatives continue to call for stronger action. Earlier in April, executives at Marks & Spencer warned that shoplifting has become increasingly bold, with organized groups targeting multiple stores in succession.
Overall, Costa Coffee’s decision reflects a broader trend among retailers seeking practical ways to protect staff, customers, and goods while maintaining welcoming store environments.
