Jay Kelly Scene Leaves Clooney and Sandler Emotional

George Clooney has revealed an unexpected and deeply personal moment from his new Jay Kelly, now streaming on Netflix—one that blurred the line between fiction and real life in a way he never anticipated.

Speaking on Entertainment Weekly’s Around the Table, the two-time Oscar winner shared that a pivotal scene in the film—where his character receives a lifetime achievement award—featured real clips from Clooney’s own film career. The creative choice was made by co-writer and director Noah Baumbach and was kept secret from both Clooney and his co-star Adam Sandler.

“Oh, it was a surprise all right. I was surprised,” Clooney admitted.
Sandler added, “We were both surprised. We felt things that we didn’t expect to feel.”

Clooney went on to explain that he had no idea Baumbach planned to incorporate footage spanning his decades-long career—complete with some unforgettable hairstyles.

“I didn’t know he was going to use clips from my own actual career, which was a surprise,” Clooney said. “And you get to look at a lot of bad haircuts over the years… the mullets.”

In a lighthearted exchange, Clooney jokingly warned Sandler not to laugh, quipping, “Don’t you laugh—you had a mullet,” prompting laughter from both actors.
