Epstein Emails Prompt Gates Withdrawal

Bill Gates pulled out of India’s high-profile AI Impact Summit just hours before delivering his scheduled keynote on Thursday, as renewed scrutiny over his past ties to Jeffrey Epstein intensified following the release of US Justice Department (DOJ) emails.

The last-minute cancellation by the Microsoft co-founder dealt another setback to the six-day summit, which had already faced criticism over organizational lapses, traffic chaos, and public controversy.

Gates Cancels Keynote After DOJ Email Release

The withdrawal came weeks after the DOJ released emails that included communications between the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and staff members of the Gates Foundation.

In a statement, the foundation said Gates would not attend the event “to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit’s key priorities.” Only days earlier, the organization had dismissed speculation about his absence and confirmed he was expected to participate.

Ankur Vora, the foundation’s chief strategy officer and head for Africa and India, delivered remarks in Gates’ place. The foundation did not respond to questions about whether the decision was directly linked to scrutiny surrounding the Epstein-related documents.

Gates has previously stated that his interactions with Epstein were limited to philanthropy-related discussions and described meeting him as a “mistake.”

AI Impact Summit Secures $200 Billion in Pledges

Despite the controversy, the AI Impact Summit secured more than $200 billion in AI infrastructure investment commitments.

Among the major announcements:

Reliance Industries unveiled a $110 billion AI infrastructure investment plan.

Tata Group signed a partnership agreement with OpenAI.

Leading global AI executives, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, attended the event.

Gates’ absence followed another high-profile cancellation earlier in the week by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, adding to challenges faced by the summit.

India Positions Itself as AI Governance Leader

The summit was billed as the first major AI forum in the Global South, with India aiming to establish itself as a key voice in global AI governance.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing child safety in artificial intelligence platforms.

“We must be even more vigilant about children’s safety,” Modi said during his keynote speech. “Just as a school syllabus is curated, the AI space should also be child- and family-guided.”

A symbolic moment marking the launch of the New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments — a set of voluntary principles promoting responsible AI development — saw top executives on stage in a unity pose. However, observers noted an awkward moment when OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, whose companies are rivals, stood side by side without joining hands while others did.

Altman also revealed that 100 million people in India now use ChatGPT weekly, underscoring the country’s growing importance in the AI ecosystem.

Organizational Challenges and Public Criticism

While investment pledges were substantial, the summit faced mounting criticism over logistical failures.

Exhibition halls were unexpectedly closed to the public on Thursday.

Police traffic restrictions caused widespread congestion in the city of 20 million people.

Galgotias University was asked to remove its stall after presenting a commercially available Chinese-made robotic dog as its own innovation, triggering backlash.

The Indian government apologized for the inconvenience caused during the initial days of the summit. Opposition parties criticized the administration for mismanaging the high-profile global event.

Microsoft researcher Jay Gala expressed frustration on social media, stating that researchers and builders were sidelined in favor of VIP movements, causing hours of delays.

Conclusion

Although Bill Gates’ withdrawal added to the turbulence surrounding India’s first major AI summit, the event still achieved significant investment milestones. However, controversies — from DOJ scrutiny to logistical breakdowns — have cast a shadow over what was intended to be a landmark moment for India’s leadership in global AI governance.
