Winona Ryder Reveals Secrets Behind Stranger Things Finale

Winona Ryder has opened up about filming one of the most intense and emotional moments in Stranger Things, revealing that the climactic scene could only be shot twice and was never rehearsed.

Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Ryder reflected on Joyce Byers’ final confrontation with Vecna in the series finale. The scene, which sees Joyce behead Vecna with an axe, marked Ryder’s last on-screen moment with Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrayed the show’s central villain.

Ryder explained that the emotional weight of the moment left no room for practice. “You can’t rehearse a scene like that. You just have to save it for the take. I think I only did it twice,” she said. Despite the violence of the sequence, she recalled a tender behind-the-scenes memory, adding, “I love Jamie so much… we were talking about bands. He’s the most lovely person.”

The moment is preceded by Joyce’s powerful line, “You fucked with the wrong family,” one of the rare uses of the F-word in the show. Series co-creator Matt Duffer explained that the writers had been saving strong language for a scene that truly earned it. “If we’re going to go there, this is the moment,” he said.

His brother, Ross Duffer, added that Joyce delivering the final blow felt natural, describing her as the group’s protector. Editing choices, including flashbacks tied to Joyce’s past trauma, further deepened the emotional impact. As Matt Duffer summed it up: “Let’s make this the most emotional decapitation in history.”

Stranger Things Season 5 is now streaming in full on Netflix.
