White House Seeks Funds to Rebuild Alcatraz Jail

The White House has proposed allocating $152 million to restore the former Alcatraz prison island as an operational high-security facility, reviving a controversial plan first announced by President Donald Trump last year. The funding request appears in the administration’s proposed federal budget for fiscal year 2027, though such proposals must be approved by Congress and are often revised during negotiations.

The budget outlines funding for the Federal Bureau of Prisons to begin rebuilding Alcatraz into what officials describe as a “state-of-the-art secure prison facility.” The historic prison, located in San Francisco Bay, has been managed by the National Park Service since its closure in 1969 and currently serves as a major tourist destination.

President Trump previously stated on social media that he had directed the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Justice, and other agencies to develop plans to reopen a “substantially enlarged and rebuilt” Alcatraz capable of housing what he described as the country’s most dangerous offenders.

Originally opened in 1934, Alcatraz was long considered one of the most secure prisons in the United States due to its isolated island location, cold waters, and powerful currents surrounding it. While several inmates attempted escape, no successful escapes were ever officially confirmed, with five prisoners still listed as missing and presumed drowned.

Before its closure, the prison held several well-known criminals, including Al Capone and James “Whitey” Bulger. According to the Bureau of Prisons, the facility was ultimately shut down due to high operating costs, which were nearly three times greater than those of other federal prisons at the time.

If approved by Congress, the proposed funding would mark the first step toward transforming the historic site back into an active correctional institution, raising questions about cost, preservation, and the future of one of America’s most recognizable landmarks.
